Nearly 19,000 children and youth experiencing homelessness were enrolled in Indiana schools in academic year 2022-2023. Together we can help homeless students succeed.
Children and youth experiencing homelessness are more likely than their peers to have mental and physical health issues, as well as to have experienced trauma and instability. They may also have lower rates of academic performance and opportunities to earn rigorous, college-ready diplomas, which may hinder their ability to pursue and succeed in postsecondary college and job opportunities. This in turn may limit their chances for meaningful career pathways and economic stability.

Homeless Students Education Status
The “Homeless Students Education Status” report, released February 2025, was created by Chamberlin/Dunn, LLC through support from Brightlane Learning. This report is a follow-up to a study that Chamberlin/Dunn conducted in 2020, which looked at data from academic year 2018-2019.
The report utilizes data provided by the Indiana Department of Education and compares homeless students’ educational outcomes and performance with peers in various subgroups. The report finds that significant gaps in educational outcomes are present statewide. Many educational outcomes have decreased for homeless students as compared to the 2020 study.
This report includes data, conclusions, and recommendations that can help homeless students succeed.
