Each month Fatima Johnson, Brightlane’s Community Engagement & Education Strategist, will be sharing some educational information and resources as we continue to learn together. This month she is helping us explore National Hispanic Heritage Month.
National Hispanic Heritage Month was first established in 1968 as a week-long celebration honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic communities across the United States. In 1988, it was expanded to a month-long observance. Uniquely, it runs from September 15 to October 15, intentionally aligning with the independence days of several Hispanic and Latin countries, including El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, and Chile, among others.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s important to reflect not only on the richness of Hispanic heritage, but also on the challenges many in these communities continue to face, especially children. Below are ideas and resources to help us celebrate and, more importantly, support our Hispanic and Latin neighbors, this month and throughout the year.
