Learning Without Limits: Eighteen Brightlane Learning Seniors Reach Graduation Day

Graduation season is here. Cue the “Pomp and Circumstance,” fire up the grill, and start the college packing list. For many families, this is the time-honored rhythm of late spring—another milestone checked off on the road to adulthood.

But for students without a permanent address, the path to that cap and gown looks very different.

In Indiana, nearly 19,000 students experiencing homelessness were enrolled in public schools during the 2022–2023 academic year. The path to graduation is not a given for these students—it’s an uphill climb.

Youth experiencing homelessness are far more likely to face physical and mental health challenges and endure trauma or school disruptions. These barriers, combined with systemic inequities, often result in lower academic performance, less access to college-ready coursework, and fewer opportunities to build the foundations for long-term success.

The numbers tell the story. While Indiana’s four-year graduation rate for students experiencing homelessness has risen from 77% in 2019 to 82% in 2023, it still lags behind the 91% rate for their housed peers. These students are also more likely to be suspended, less likely to attend consistently, and more likely to fall behind on standardized benchmarks, all of which limit their diploma options and post-secondary prospects.

At Brightlane Learning, we are working to change that. We believe all students deserve the chance to thrive in school and beyond, regardless of their housing status. That’s why we pair students experiencing homelessness with dedicated tutors and mentors who help them overcome academic gaps and envision a future where success is possible.

And on May 22, we’ll honor just how far these students have come—and how far they’re ready to go.

This celebration is an important reminder of what’s possible. We are proud to honor the seniors in the Brightlane Learning program, all set to graduate this month. In total, that’s eighteen graduating seniors who have faced—and conquered—obstacles most of us never will. For each of them, graduation represents an opportunity to take a new path and, in many cases, to be the first in their families to do so.

Our Senior Celebration will be filled with speeches, laughter, stories of resilience, and—of course—cake. It’s our way of saying: You did it. You made it. And we see you.

As one student recently told us, “My Brightlane Learning tutor played a big role in helping me get into college. That will do so much for me in ways I don’t even know yet, but I’m so excited for what’s to come.”

Eighteen students. Eighteen chapters. Eighteen stories of strength. This is more than a celebration—it’s a promise that their past does not define their future.
