Let’s Learn Together: Universal Human Rights Month

Blog

Each month, Fatima Johnson, Brightlane’s Community Engagement & DEI Strategist, will be sharing a DEI insight as we continue to learn together. This month she is helping us explore Universal Human Rights Month, why it’s important, and how we can support it.

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which established a list of fundamental human rights that should be universally protected around the world. This document serves as a global blueprint of policies and laws used to protect the basic rights that should be granted to every human. In December 2001, President George W Bush established Human Rights Week, which began on International Human Right Day that falls annually on December 10th. Over time, this observance has grown into a month-long celebration of our human rights.

As we continue on our DEIB journeys, I would like to encourage you to learn more about our human rights and ways to observe during the month of December and year-round. Below are some resources to assist you.
