The entire state of Indiana is experiencing an extreme shortage of affordable housing, making our state one of the worst in the nation for housing affordability, despite previously being known as one of the most affordable places to live. Many Indiana residents spend more than half of their monthly income on housing, causing them to sacrifice necessities such as food and medication. Studies show that Indiana currently has an affordable rental shortage of 139,318 units and growing, as household incomes barely increase and the annual household income needed for housing continues to outpace those incomes.
